May Gather & Gab announced

The Stone County Historical Society will host its second “Gather & Gab” community storytelling event May 18 at 10 a.m. at the Stone County Historical Museum. Light refreshments will be served. This month’s featured guest will be Glenn Morrison, 92, who grew up in the Fox area and is widely known for his vivid storytelling, colorful expressions, and firsthand memories of rural life in Stone County decades ago. Organizers say Morrison is a “wealth of information” whose storiesoffer a rare glimpse into the traditions, humor, and everyday life of earlier generations in the Ozarks.Community members — especiallynewcomers to the area — are encouraged to attend and take part in what promises to be a lively and entertaining morning of conversation, memories, and local folklore.Among the old sayings Morrison may discuss are colorful expressions such as “He’s as dumb as dirt,” “She’s three axe handles wide,” “Steep as a mule’s face,” and “He’s so ugly he’d make a train take a dirt road.” Other familiar phrases from generations past include “Crooked as a dog’s hind leg,” “A watched pot never boils,” “Faster than greased lightning,” and “He jumped on that like a hen on a June bug.” The Gather & Gab series was created by the Historical Society as a way to preserve local stories, reconnect neighbors, and celebrate the unique culture and heritage of Stone County through informal conversation and shared memories. Organizers invite anyone interested in local history, storytelling, or old-time sayings to attend.
